UN sanctions against North Korea introduce new limits on international trade

The UN Security Council has adopted resolution 2270 (2016) which, sanctioning illegal nuclear tests recently carried out by North Korea in violation and flagrant disregard of prior resolutions, imposes on States the obligation to inspect North Korean cargo within or transiting through their territories, and restrictions on North Korean nationals from leasing or chartering their flagged vessels. The resolution also obliges States to deny overfly, landing and take-off rights to North Korean planes which contain goods subject to UN restrictions. Moreover, the Pyongyang government is prohibited from selling minerals, and States from supplying aviation fuel to North Korea.
