Multimodal mobility. The Commission launches a public consultation
On 3 December 2021, the Commission launched a public consultation in order to gather the stakeholders’ views on a legislative proposal on digital mobility services to facilitate journey planning and ticketing for trips combining different means of transport or involving different operators.
Part of the 2020 Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy, the initiative finds its rationale in that planning and buying tickets for multimodal journeys often faces barriers in terms of lacking information and limited options, especially when travelling cross-border. Therefore, the Commission aims to address the market challenges involved in the development of digital mobility services in order to better integrate public transport and rail services in a multimodal mix for a seamless passenger experience. More particularly, the Commission aims, on the one hand, at better understanding how stakeholders use multimodal digital mobility services, such as Mobility as a Service (MaaS) applications, and, on the other hand, to gather their views on, amongst other things, the insufficient availability and accessibility of data, the lack of cooperation between transport operators, the limited availability of digital tickets and the inadequate payment system interoperability.
Stakeholders will have until 23 February 2022 to submit their opinions by filling in the online questionnaire, which will then be used to support the impact assessment the Commission is currently carrying out.
