Environment: the Commission proposes a revision of the ETS System for the aviation sector in Europe

The European Commission has proposed a revision of the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) for the aviation sector so as to make it ready to the application, in 2021, of the Global Market-Based Measure (GMBM) to reduce aviation Co2 emissions (more information about the GMBM adopted in October 2016 by ICAO, the International Civil Aviation Organization, is available at the following LINK).

The proposed measure will ensure a level playing field and equal treatment of all airlines covering flights between airports in the European Economic Area, and will help to offset aviation sector’s carbon footprint for European operations, while pursuing European climate objectives and the global implementation of the GMBM.

The proposal to revise the EU Emission Trading System will be discussed by the European Parliament and the Council, which are expected to finalize the co-decision process by the end of 2017.
